Inconsistent Covid-19 Immunity in Asymptomatic Individuals

Immunity to infection from SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic individuals could decline quickly based on a new study published in Nature Medicine. The study focused on two groups of people, mildly symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, with Covid-19.

Interestingly, this study showed the lung could be affected even in asymptomatic individuals. CT scans of the lungs found patchy areas called “ground glass opacity” – two-thirds of asymptomatic individuals had these abnormalities in at least one lung and one-third had ground glass opacity detected in both lungs. This suggests possible long-term health effects even for asymptomatic individuals.

The duration of protection from reinfection is also still in question for recovering patients returning to their daily lives. Further study is needed to determine the short-term and especially the long-term effects from Covid-19 infection.
