What Organs Can Be Screened by a Full-body MRI?

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan can be used to create detailed images within the body. This painless, non-invasive procedure allows doctors to identify issues from cancer to damage from COVID-19.

Here are some of the organs that can be screened during an MRI scan.

Brain and spinal cord

MRI can help identify anomalies in the brain, including tumors, bleeding, swelling, inflammation, and damage from a stroke or traumatic brain injury. MRI can also identify spinal cord disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.

Thyroid

MRI scan of the thyroid, located at the front of the neck, can identify growths and lesions around the thyroid. This can help pinpoint possible causes of issues like swelling, pain, or a lump in the front of the neck, or voice changes.

Liver and gallbladder

MRI scans can help identify lesions on the liver that may indicate liver cancer. MRI can also be used to identify issues in the gallbladder, which works closely with the liver, such as cancer growth or obstructions.

Pancreas and bile ducts

MRI can help identify pancreatic cancer as well as, or even better than, many other types of scans, such as ultrasound or CT. MRI can also help identify obstructions in the bile ducts around the pancreas, and determine whether a growth is cancerous or benign.

Kidneys

A full-body MRI can help identify, diagnose, and determine the stage of kidney cancer. This is especially important because early stages of kidney disease and cancer do not usually have noticeable symptoms.

Adrenal glands

MRI can identify lesions of the adrenal glands, which are located on top of each kidney and produce many essential hormones. MRI can also help differentiate between adrenocortical adenomas and other types of lesions.

Prostate

MRI of the prostate can help screen for prostate cancer in at-risk men, possibly avoiding unnecessary biopsy. MRI can be used to identify the spread of existing cancer. MRI can also help examine or identify other prostate issues, including infection, enlarged prostate, abnormal congenital conditions, or complications after pelvic surgery.

Ovaries

Doctors may use MRI to screen for ovarian cancer, or to differentiate between benign and malignant growths or lesions on the ovaries. Scanning the ovaries may also find a cause of abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or unexplained infertility.

Uterus

Performing MRI of the uterus and other areas of the pelvis can help identify uterine and endometrial cancer. It can also be used to monitor the growth of diagnosed tumors and other issues like endometriosis.

Bladder

MRI can be highly sensitive and specific for detecting bladder tumors and identifying cancer stage. It can also be used to help monitor individuals receiving treatment for bladder cancer.
