There are two adrenal glands in the body, one on top of each kidney. The adrenal glands make hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism, response to stress, and water/salt balance. Adrenal adenomas are benign (non-cancerous) tumors found in all age groups and increase in frequency with age. The majority (about 95%) of adrenal adenomas are non-functioning (do not produce hormones), in which case they are asymptomatic (do not cause symptoms). In all cases, but especially in the setting of known current or previous malignancy, adrenal adenomas should be fully evaluated.

Adenomyomatosis is an abnormality of the gallbladder characterized by overgrowth of the inner mucus lining and thickening of the muscle wall. It is not clear what causes this condition and it is considered benign (not harmful and non-cancerous).

An anal/rectal abscess is a pus-filled lump around the anus (the opening of the rectum to the outside of the body) or the rectum (the portion of the gastrointestinal tract that begins at the end of the colon and ends at the anus).

Adrenal metastases are lesions seen in the adrenal gland caused by the spread of cancer from other organs to the adrenal gland.

The adnexal region encompassess the ovaries and fallopian tubes. A cyst is a sac-like pocket of membranous tissue that contains fluid, air, or other substances. Cysts can grow almost anywhere in the body or under the skin. Most cysts are benign (non-cancerous). Whether a cyst needs treatment depends on a number of factors, including the type of cyst, the location, if the cyst is causing pain or discomfort, and whether the cyst is infected.

The adnexal region encompassess the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Women have two ovaries - each about the size and shape of an almond - on each side of the uterus. A lesion is an abnormal finding. Full assessment of adnexal lesions requires physical examination, laboratory tests and focused imaging.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor of the kidney that is composed of blood vessels, fat, and smooth muscle cells. Symptoms from AMLs are rare but can include hematuria (blood in the urine), flank pain, hypertension, impairment of kidney function, and can lead to life-threatening rupture.

Like other parts of your body, the uterus can come in many different shapes or sizes. The most common position of the uterus is anteverted (cervix points towards the front of the body). This is an anatomical description that is usually asymptomatic (does not cause symptoms), with no follow-up needed. If you are having pelvic pressure or pain, then discuss this with your primary care provider or GYN for further evaluation and management.

Adenomyosis is a non-cancerous condition where endometrial tissue is inside the uterus muscle. This condition is estimated to be found in 20-35% of women. It is not clear what causes adenomyosis. The condition usually does not cause symptoms, but sometimes can cause irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding and/or pelvic pain.
